NFBCO Meet the Blind Month

The National Federation of the Bind of Colorado's Meet the Blind Month efforts are going strong!  Things kicked off on October 2nd with Colorado Association of Blind Students (CABS) participation in Auraria Campus Disability Awareness Fair.  During this event we were able to pass out literature as well as meet potential new members of CABS!

On October 5th and 6th the Colorado springs chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of Colorado participated as a Gold Sponsor of the Adapted Home Exhibit.  Members from the Colorado Springs Chapter had a booth where literature was distributed and where raffle tickets and t-shirts were sold.  NFBCO had the opportunity to speak about the Colorado Center for the Blind and senior services.  It was a really productive event!

The Colorado center for the Blind conducted an open house on October 11th where members from the community were invited in to see the center and learn about the unique training program tha tis offered.  Several members of the community were able to tour the center and see students in action and the positive philosophy of blindness at work.  This was a really cool event that resulted in increased understanding of the competence and capabilities of the blind.

On October 13th, the North Metro Chapter had an informational table at the Arvada Public Library.  During this time, we brailled name cards, passed out white cane pens, conducted cane demonstrations, answered questions, and distributed literature.  The event overlapped with a children's Halloween festival and was very well attended despite rainy weather!

NFBCO worked with the Mile High Chapter and the Denver Chapter to plan a literature distribution on 16th street mall.  During this event over 30 volunteers passed out literature, answered questions, brailled names, and hung out on 16th street mall!  Over 2,000 pieces of literature were distributed and two guest volunteers from the American Council of the Blind handed out literature for a couple of hours even though they admittedly did not realize that they were with the wrong group!  We appreciated the help anyway!!!

On October 17th the NFB of Colorado will be represented at Keiser Permanente's disability awareness dinner where we will be able to provide information about our organization and network with other disability related organizations in Colorado.  This promises to be a productive networkign opportunity.

The Pueblo Chapter will be hosting a dinner on Saturday October 20th.  During this dinner, guests will hear information about the National Federation of the Blind and will be given literature.  This promises to be an exciting event that should result in a great fundraiser for the Pueblo Chapter.

On October 23rd the NFB of Colorado will have a booth at Denver Children's Hospital.  At Children's hospital we will be able to distribute literature and make connections with those who can refer people to our organization!  This will be a very exciting opportunity.

Meet the Blind month will end with our NfBCO State Convention which will take place in Boulder Colorado ion October 25th-28th.  This will be an exciting event where we will have the opportunity to learn and adopt the policies that will determine the direction of our affiliate for the upcoming year.  This will be an exciting event for everyone!
