Each year the National Federation of the Blind hosts an Amazing Vacation Travel Raffle in which participants purchase tickets (1 for $10 or 3 for $20) to be entered into a drawing for a $3,500 travel voucher from eTravel Unlimited. This voucher can be used on a vacation or vacations of the winners choosing.
Although there is only one winner, every participant can walk away from the raffle with the satisfaction of knowing that they are helping blind people in Colorado. Proceeds from the travel raffle support the our NFB of Colorado Scholarship program in which we give over $15,000 in scholarships to blind college students each year. Although the unemployment rate of the general population is approximately 7%, unemployment for blind people is 70%. Post secondary education is one of the most powerful tools available to decrease this employment disparity.
The National Federation of the Blind of Colorado also hosts Braille Enrichment for Literacy and Learning Summer Camps. These camps allow children throughout the state of Colorado to participate in a two week immersion into Braille, orientation and mobility, and daily living skills. Besides all of the great skills that children take away from the program, they gain confidence and a strong belief that blindness does not have to stop us from achieving our dreams.
